If you're looking for a generic adventure story with some lighthearted moments, "Mel and the EX-Rank Skill Appraisal" might be your cup of tea. The protagonist, Mel, discovers an extraordinary ability to read others' thoughts and intentions. As the plot unfolds, Mel finds himself in various situations, gradually uncovering a larger narrative. There are action scenes and character development, although it leans more towards an ecchi genre rather than romance. Mel is portrayed as a heroic figure defending his friends while exploring new things, though there's a serious moment involving his elf friend Slyphy's memory loss – a topic that could have been explored further, but the author chose to keep it light.
The novel has its strengths and shows promise, but it could benefit from a better sales pitch that highlights its key elements. The translation is clean, without typos or awkward phrasing, making it accessible even for those not familiar with webtoon terminology. It follows a common trope of a character growing with their unique skill and embarking on a journey.
While it may resemble another novel I can't recall at the moment, featuring an elf named Sylphy and a magician, "Mel and the EX-Rank Skill Appraisal" deserves more recognition. Give it a try; if you don't enjoy it within the first five chapters, feel free to drop it. It's an underappreciated gem waiting to be discovered.
