Although classified as a shoujo manga, "Boku wa Imouto" primarily revolves around the perspective of our male lead, Yori Yuuki. From the outset, it's evident that he harbors deep feelings for his twin sister, Iku. These feelings are so intense that he decides to act on them, but her initial reaction isn't favorable. Consequently, Yori resorts to contrived and immature schemes to win his sister's affection without being discovered, which forms the crux of the story's early drama. A redeeming factor is that the narrative occasionally shifts to Iku's point of view, adding depth and intrigue. Regrettably, this balance doesn't persist throughout the manga's run.
As the story progresses, the central conflict between the siblings evolves, incorporating third and fourth parties. It's clear that these additions aim to prolong what should have been a concise tale. The plot eventually descends into Twilight-like nonsense, featuring two handsome young men vying for the attention of an indecisive girl, despite her obvious preference for one over the other.
This dynamic significantly weakened the characters for me. We have Iku, the ditzy blonde sister; Yori, the dark-haired, controlling brother; and Yano, whose character remains perplexing. The forced love triangle among them feels unconvincing. While I shouldn't spoil this twist for those unfamiliar with the series, seasoned readers of shoujo manga can predict it well in advance. There are additional characters worth mentioning, some of whom you'll detest, while others remain irrelevant until the concluding volumes.
Examining Kotomi Akio's other works, I discovered she authored one of my favorite shoujo manga, which came as a surprise given the average artwork in "Boku wa Imouto." Throughout the series, the illustrations feel generic, failing to distinguish themselves from the myriad of other shoujo manga. The only solace is recognizing that Kotomi Akio has since improved artistically since creating "Boku wa Imouto."
In summary, "Boku wa Imouto" initially captivated me with its portrayal of forbidden love and the inherent challenges such relationships entail. However, the story devolves into soap opera territory, laden with predictable tropes. Combined with the issues I've highlighted, these elements detracted from what could have been an engaging manga experience.
Yori's love for Iku was one of sacrifice, for a better future for her; while Iku had to find her own strength and determination to prove her love for Yori. Their deep love came with a hefty price tag, along with challenges that tested whether their love was true.
The author left the ending to the readers' imagination; though it's not the perfect ending, I think it is good enough.
SO, GO READ IT AND DECIDE FOR YOURSELF IF YOU WILL WISH THEM HAPPINESS. (I do. q/(*.*)p)
Iku, the twin sister, initially doesn't return Yori's feelings and is deeply confused by her own emotions as well as his. She doesn't want to lose her beloved older brother, who she feels has been growing distant lately. To complicate matters further, her friend Tomoka also harbors feelings for Yori, creating a tangled web of emotions. But none of this stops Yori from loving Iku even more, fueled by her subtle displays of jealousy.
This manga is truly a must-read. If you haven't picked it up yet, do yourself a favor and dive in! It's far better than any synopsis or review could convey. Even the anime adaptation pales in comparison (yes, there is an anime). So please, give it a read and enjoy the experience!
