The story is marketed as a slice of life, but it falls flat because the protagonist constantly finds himself in unnecessary trouble. Lack of character growth is a major issue – the girls are attracted to him without any clear reason, except for the dragon girl. The protagonist relies heavily on crude language, which becomes repetitive and uninteresting.
While the first half has potential, with a decent plot and likable characters, things take a nosedive after that. It's hard to justify giving it anything higher than a 3. The first half earns a solid 5/5.
In the second half, the addition of new characters brings minimal diversity and personality. The protagonist's immaturity is frustrating, especially when he refuses to mature. A minor character, who barely had any development or significance, suddenly becomes a central figure in a forced marriage due to a misunderstanding. It's absurd and unrealistic.
The focus on lolis shifts the tone, and while it started sweet, it quickly turns into an inappropriate and poorly executed theme. The world-building is non-existent or poorly executed, ruining the slice of life aspect and replacing it with a shallow loli-centric plot that fails to engage. The attempt at adventure is bland and uninteresting.
In conclusion, despite the promising start, the second half is an utter disappointment, earning a 0/5. Save your time and avoid this novel to avoid being let down. First half: 5/5, Second Half: 0/5.
The author's problematic tendencies are evident, particularly in their portrayal of relationships. The love interests often fall into a cliché where they appear young but are actually much older, and the explanations for the harem dynamics are laughably weak. Sadly, this is yet another isekai story that reduces women to mere objects, serving as a platform for the author to express misguided beliefs about women seeking strong men and being submissive.
The translation quality is abysmal, bordering on being unprofessional, and there are even hints of racism. It's clear from the text that the author's intentions and execution are flawed.
The story is quite laid-back, with minimal intense plot developments. There's action, but it's resolved quickly, so it doesn't create significant tension. The main character follows a typical isekai archetype, becoming powerful and gathering a harem. It's formulaic, but it doesn't bother me since I don't necessarily view such characters as a negative. They're just not particularly original – aside from common strength levels like normal, weak, or overpowered.
A point of confusion is that I believe the MC isn't a teenager because of a comment they made early on, which would suggest they're older. However, their language and use of terms like "Finna" seem more suited to a teenager, which is a bit jarring. It might be due to translation, but it's worth mentioning.
Another aspect is the abundance of lolis in the story – at least six to eight, including four ghost ones. The MC repeatedly clarifies that he's not a loli enthusiast, but the presence of many young girls is notable. The dragon, being thousands of years old, is a separate issue.
Despite these minor issues, I've been enjoying the story overall. It's a light read, perfect for relaxing on the couch, rather than seeking deep emotional experiences. The MC lives his life with no grand purpose beyond that.
Giving it a 4 out of 5 stars due to the occasional teenage-like dialogue and the loli-centric harem (even if the MC doesn't openly admit to it, it seems like a running joke). If these aspects were adjusted, I'd rate it higher.
Update (September 10, 2020): Progressed to Chapter 122
Nothing significant has changed in my opinion, aside from a few parts that aren't as enjoyable to read, which is common in many books. The MC's teenage-like speech persists, and the harem consists entirely of lolis. As of my current position, no adult-bodied female characters have shown romantic interest. Here's the list of confirmed or potential harem members:
1. Dragon Loli
2. Vampire Loli
3. Slime Loli
4. 2 Young Beastkin Lolis
5. 3 Wraith Lolis
6. The Hero Loli (unclear if it's part of the harem)
7. The Princess Loli (unclear if affectionate)
8. The Intelligent Sword Loli (a literal sword turning into a loli, funny touch)
Overall, the story remains entertaining, and I look forward to continuing.
Each chapter felt essential, even those depicting seemingly trivial moments like a bar brawl, which helped to illustrate the aggressive nature of demons and the MC's struggle to comprehend their mindset. The characters were well-developed with distinct personalities, avoiding the cookie-cutter traits found in some other novels. The MC wasn't a perfect, all-knowing hero; he was goofy, impulsive, and struggled with fighting. He relied on others and faced his weaknesses, making him a relatable and engaging protagonist.
Of course, this LN may not cater to everyone's taste, especially those who不喜欢 harem themes. Some might prefer a more conventional love interest or more restrained emotions. But I believe it's important for the characters to pursue their desired happiness naturally, which aligns with their personalities. In summary, while the novel has its flaws, those who overlook them will find a rewarding story filled with depth and authentic character growth.
