What breaks or seals the deal for me it's the presentation. I mean, at the end of the day the character being OP it's something that is inevitable and you either hate it or like it.
This guy started as a literal no one and it's thanks to the side characters that he has a purpose and not just aimlessly wandering around with his gun trying to explore a planet. All these side characters that you find unnecessary taught him everything he needed to not only lose himself but also deal with the rest of the world.
I think the issue here is that the presentation has been getting too lazy I'm sure other characters will get to shine but they need to be properly written in, not polished. Otherwise you are going to have those bullshit scenes like in shonen manga when side characters only have their own scenes because the main character isn't around.
