I really loved the beginning. Mysterious, intriguing, adventure and did I mention very mysterious? This author really knows how to create an interesting world with its' own rules. You really get into it, eager to get up the tower, because the story is moving at a good pace and a lot of things are happening. You get villains that you really start to hate, You get a lot of twists that go back and forth, and it gets kinda unbelievable but it's still good... Even though the author leaves some questions unanswered, you forgive them because you think it'll be answered later...But I think the author forgot about those questions. It feels like the author had a good idea, but didn't know where they really wanted to take it. I doubt they know how they want to end it. I think there are supposed to be (100 floors? Someone correct me if I'm wrong), but it seems like every floor there's something that builds up the drama but there's very little substance. Good guys don't always win but they never really lose. MC's and villains are becoming very OP already and they're somewhere around the 30th floor. What about the other 70 floors? The people who have reached the top, are they supposed to be gods? My biggest peeve is that the story has been moving at a snail's pace, with the author adding a lot of unnecessary drama and failed epicness to try to bulk it up.
This is subjective me scored based on my experience reading.
Season 1 = Magnificent (10.0)
Season 2 = Meh (1.0)
(10+1.0)/2 = 5.5
After reading through the 2nd season, it just got worse. I think it'd better ended before falling apart.
I might change my opinion if it gets better...
World building doesn't mean a thing when the story moves at a snail pace...
The dialogue became cringeworthy by season 2 (you end up reading people repeat the same sentence 5 times each chapter, every chapter)...
Character development is nonexistent - powering up doesn't count.
... I want to see where it is going,
but one Berserk - incomplete and roundabout, even if people consider it a masterpiece - is enough, I don't need another one. My rating (7.3) is mostly for Part 1, as Part 2 would deserve a (3.1) by itself.
Update (v.2 c.167): this loses another 0.5 from me. The author just screwed his MC's personality.
I loved part 1 of ToG but now it's annoying
I don't know exactly where the series went wrong for me. I didn't love the first season, it had so many similarities to this particular manga. Some of the characters were even almost carbon copies, but I didn't mind it much. I liked the "magic system" and the idea of going through several levels to reach the top of the tower. I really appreciated the little surprise about Rachel SIU gave at the end. Overall it was enjoyable and interesting.
I don't really care about the art. I have no complaints I've always loved good stories even without visuals. I appreciated the little afterword/company profile at the end of some of the chapters. I liked that the author really put some thought into how he envisioned the ToG world is. His world building is well thought-out though there are a few holes but it's a nonissue. I suspect he likes to fill those in as the story goes. However...
The dialogue and plot development had never been A class but when the Second Season started and especially now at the Hell Train Arc...I literally cringed at the horrible dialogue. It felt like I was reading another manhwa. The conversations were too...awkward and horribly arranged. The way the plot was unfolding was a little pushed... I can't explain really explain it well but I had to skip some parts and it pains me to do that since ToG is heavy on the little details.
Im not gonna give up on this though. It's an interesting world and I like the author's work ethics. I do hope he follows his original storyline more closely than the changes he introduced to answer his fanbase.
Starts off very well, the first season is great the second one starts well too but it goes downhill from there it becomes incoherent and it makes little sense, keeps inventing things out of the blue and characters relations become completely ridiculous without bothering to explain much of what happens.
It’s a pity really but it keeps getting worse. I'm still hoping it gets back on track thou, much wasted potential here imo.
First season is an 8-8.5, second season depends on the arc, goes from 3 to 6.
Edit (end S2): In any case, even with the downfall as a whole it's a decent manhwa with some very bad parts, it just became a more generic/classic shounen with lots of fights and too many weird and incoherent stuff going on, some completely off imo, the author sometimes notices his blunders and tries to mend it later but sometimes it's like putting a bandage on an exposed bone fracture. Lack of consistency and the Rachel plot are the main bad aspects imo.
I've read many many mangas with MC's with plot armor, but this is the first I've ever seen a bad guy with such a thick plot armor. I have been waiting for that b**ch to be taken down but I'm foreseeing that she'll be there till the end... a pity, I can see her either having a change of heart at the last moment or play as gollum for the story.
I'm also have lot's of troubles with time frames in the story, the timeline seams a bit strange to me, like, how many thousands of years passed since the 10 families took power? are all chars immortal? or they just have ridiculously long lives?
This started as interesting and was great once. Then it became a dull, decent series I kept reading. Then it became seriously dumb for a while after Bam was 'killed', and I actually dropped it. I picked it back up once I saw that some action has returned but now, after seeing the main character still following after the girl IN THE SAME MANNER, AND WITHOUT ANY CHANGE OR CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT at all; I am just gonna put this one down for good.
You would think something would've change after so many things happen and so much time passes. I am fine with MC being a psychopathic stalker, but I am not fine with him being the exact same pathetic stalker he was through out the series after all this time.
Seriously WTF just happened to this webtoon ? Starting from Workshop battle arc it seemed to have lost all it's charm...
what is the purpose fro Baam climbing the tower now 😕 to chase after Rachel 😕 to confront Rachel 😕 and then do what 😕 Musings of Naruto chasing after Sasuke written all over it....
Shame because i thought this Webtoon really had potential, but the author completely took the wrong turn starting from that workshop battle arc which was hyped up so big but failed at everything....now we are left with too many useless characters who serve no purpose, Lame MC who has no purpose and Plot that could have been an epic grand scale adventure turned into obsessive and Voyeuristic attempt to cling onto something
I like ToG. I has many characters, its interesting keeping a tab on them all. It manage to be both funny and serious at times. There are a lot of nice twists here and I await the moment when all of these OP characters will start turning on each other - OP battle is dream come true. However... lately it seems to be stuck. I stopped reading more than a year ago in order to wait for more chapters and when I decided to catch up I found out that for that time nothing happened! WTF?! New characters are there but the old ones are pretty scarce. Bam acts too cold and damn it! Why the hair? I liked his girlish looks :< Oh, well. ToG is again on hold and I`ll probably give it a try after maybe 60-70 new chapters. See you next year ^^
This webtoon is divided into 2 parts and sadly even the quality is divided into 2 just as that
Part 1
....Overall PERFECT! 10/10
Part 2
I have to say part 2 has made me completely despise this webtoon and hence the low score
While the 1st season was great, the 2nd season is kinda a bummer. Serious drop on quality of writing.
On the other note, I still don't really understand Baam's motivation. I mean, cmon, she's not even Jennifer Aniston's Rachel. She's the backstabbing jerk Rachel. Just hire a high ranker hitman and move on. Baam's whining over and over on how he need to meet Rachel is becoming hard to read.
Only the first season was worth reading
The second season is like whirlwind of characters and arcs...the author endlessly tries to highlight other characters more and more which is confusing because after a while one cannot tell them apart. The main plot only progresses after 60-70 chapters.
