This series... oh boy. Where do I even begin?
Pros:
Cons:
I seem to be in the minority when I say that this series is not the best thing ever. Don't get me wrong, ok. This series has a pretty great plot that does have a good depth to it. Most everything in this series is great. Most everything. This being said, I dropped this series for one reason.
And good christ. I can't emphasize this enough-
The main character is *UNBEARABLE.
The main character, Baam, is the Angelic type. This means that he is so goddamn selfless that he would rather suffer for his friends than be happy. While this isn't the worst personality trait, Baam takes it to the EXTREME. Every single time he needs to make a decision, he always puts his friends first. Again, while this isn't necessarily bad, Baam is just quite frankly annoying about it. And what makes this worse is that his illogical though patterns don't ever go wrong. He's even more OP than Kirito and he's just so annoying and so much of a cry baby. He is the type that I hate.
Most of his friends around him are pretty great however. I personally enjoyed most of the side characters.
First season was great, but the second season is not good. In the second season, Baam is getting worst after he was betrayed by his precious friend due to chase after her; at same time, Baam is getting stronger, yet he puts his friends in dangerous circumstances. I hope this series can pick up better progress to revolve around Baam's goals/desires, such as continue to climb up tower for himself, find what Hwa Ryun's motive, and catch up from season 1 characters such as Yu Han Sung and Lo Bo Bia Ren. I don't think I can continue to read this series, but I probably will try to pick it up again in the future.
This is by far one of my favorite reads of all time. It has great characters, great story, and amazing art that gets better and better as the series goes on. It does have a few slow points in season 2, which i personally enjoyed, but I understand some people were not so big on it. If you dont like it to much just power through it, the story gets SOOO good after you will enjoy it for sure.
Many people are saying here and there that season 2 has ruined the whole story. Many battles are long, which may make readers feel exhausted to follow. However, the story is great, and the characters do develop through the progress of the story. The author actually knows exactly where the story is going, only that its complication can sometimes confuse readers.
Not to say, the art in season 2 got SO much better than season 1. 10/10
I started reading Tower of God back when the Company translated the first chapters in english, and I was hooked from the very first chapter. It felt interesting. Original. The characters were intriguing, the setting mysterious, the art colorful and the pace nice and swift. The plot was simple but fun to read, and gradually grew more complex as things moved on.
Season one starts good and only gets better from there. Season two starts a little wonky, but makes up for it with two of the most amazing arcs I've ever seen in graphic form. Up until the start of the "Workshop battle" arc, this was probably my favorite ongoing manga/manhwa to read.
At around that point, however, problems started to show up. For one thing, the author apparently got a hand injury, which resulted in the art becoming less detailed in places and the pacing drastically slowing down. I actually took a break from it for a while at one point, since things were advancing at a crawl that was rather unsatisfied to read from week to week.
That said, it's since recovered from its rough patch and is rising to match and perhaps even exceed its original story, as the plot opens up and events begin to escalate to an epic scale.
Overall, an excellent story to enjoy, filled with twists and mysteries and intense battles. Doesn't quite earn a perfect 10 due to the aforementioned rough spots, but still very much worth reading!
It is a webtoon done as a serial each WEEK. If webtoons/Korean style aren't your flavour, read something else. Otherwise...
It is amazing! Holy moly! I have even dragged my husband into webtoons for this single one. Yes, the art gets better, the story is full of twists and secrets, and it is ongoing. We all want answers right away, but this series only builds more mystery in my opinion. Again, it is ONGOING, so if you want to fall in lkve with a set of characters, and read a serial each week filled wih adventure and mystery: read it. If you want answers conclusions, a finished product quickly: wait until this series is finished or don't bother. We can't all love the same things 100%, and that is okay. 😛
P.S. personally, I love season 2 as much as 1.
As i read this comment, that just awesome rage spilled all over the place, lol. If you give rating 1 but u liked 1 season - that just stupid.
Still it
s the best piece i have ever read, Season 2 is much better than first one, there is still no MC here and i think its great (no Bam is no MC still, however you look at it). Its not like manga so if you want to pick it up dont expect things you saw in japanese comics. This is webtoon, but more of the story goes by SIU blog (comic is enough to understand what is happening, but sometimes it feels weird). The rating is not overrated, and it doesnt matter how much bullshit ppl spill here, it will ramain high - so JUST TRY IT YOURSELF! - if you didn`t already 🙂
Tower of God started out good with an interesting premise, a good cast (most of them pretty generic) and some creative tests/games. There are times you might draw comparison with Hunter x Hunter or some RPG games but most of the time it standed out on its own.
It's not original or even unique in world building (contrary to what blind fans claim) as ToG borrows most of the world building elements from other works but that's not bad if it's done well.
But the second season has been disappointing. Author has dragged many arcs in the second season maybe thanks to the popularity of Season 1. The tests are boring & they are not creative at all like Season 1. Many of the characters are flat & boring, and sadly the main character (Baam/Viole) still remains the same unidimension shonen idiot (the generic protagonist who has a heart of gold but brainless fool). I don't understand how author claims that tower is a world not for those who are afraid of shedding blood
_Baam has easy time (without shedding blood) due to plot armor. Author wants us to believe Baam is suffering but not really. There are battles which are dragged on for many chapters, the fights are boring to be honest. The most important part is that most of the battles are not even important to the series...author draws them just to drag the series.
Tower of God was one of my favorite series during its Season 1 despite the main character's generic & flat personality. But Season 2 has ruined it for me. Author seriously needs to stop wasting time on unnecessary things (especially taking more than 30-40 chapters which is terrible).
In short, Tower of God doesn't deserve such high rating.
Very good and in-depth for a shounen manga.
People seems to not consider the fact that Rachel is the very first light of Baam's life. The life that he is enjoying right now and the life that he had been living previously in the dark cold cave, it was all thanks to Rachel.
Its true that Baam is in denial right now in regards to Rachel, but what he needed from Rachel is not to imprison Rachel or anything, he just want an explanation.. a closure to the psychological conflict that he had, the very first one at that.
Furthermore, Baam is not a machine that could take a certain folder named 'Rachel' and shift-delete the folder out of his mind, be real please
This comic used to be really good. However, it became too ambitious for its own good and the author can't seem to flesh details out properly. Furthermore, he's really stingy on details and withholds too much and I'm talking about Baam and Rachel!
A long time ago, the plot between them should've been resolved. If it wasn't resolved, then why? But the author remains silent and refuses to dish a single detail. Instead, he ruins the plot completely by making Rachel a troll character, over actually telling us anything that could advance Baam's character. Instead, Baam remains a crazed stalker who stays forever the same. Same goes for Rachel 'cos she could've been a worthy and interesting opponent who actually advances Baam's background story (And vice versa for Baam to develop her). But SIU made us hate her with a vengeance so I don't think there's a chance she'll ever be accepted by the fans.
But wait! Rachel and Baam aren't the only problems. Because SIU refuses to use much narration, so he's forced to dedicate mountains of panels just to write out the damn dialogue. Not to mention, the plot gets really confusing due to the severe lack of details. If you also add in the fact SIU took 3 or more years just to develop Floor 2, only to whizz past multiple floors and not even bother to explain much, it's a real sinker. Throw in too, that he likes to use characters like Parakewl just to "reset" the plot or action, to whatever he wants and all the fun + joy in predicting the plot is gone.
Well apparently TOG runs in author's head and he knows all and expects us to know it all as well. Too bad readers are leaving by the droves.
I really don't understand how the author could fail so badly in season 2. Season 1 was excellent, but then somehow after a short break, it loses its dark grittiness, the mystery of characters' backgrounds, and pretty much any semblance of storytelling.
If anyone can contact the author in Korean, I suspect plenty of readers want to sign a petition for him to delete all of season 2 and redo.
In summary:
Season 1 - Read it!
Season 2 - Drop it fast before it leaves a horrible aftertaste. I know it's tempting to continue in hopes that it's "decent." Don't.
After a good world building till the workshop arc, it suddenly gone down the drain. One of the best parts of first season was how there were lot of mysteries and slowly one after another was reveled to make a coherent plot all the while being compact and spot on. But now its just one battle after another and one game after another, and how protagonists outwits the enemies in a close call.
Introducing too many characters without any purpose isnt helping the plot either, its making the whole thing shallow. Instead of introducing so many characters how about improving the personalities of already existing characters. Bam stays as the bum he was in the beginning still chasing rachel, koon is the same cool guy he always was and rak is a comedy sidekick, hwa ryun is well.. a guide who does nothing but guide, as well as various other characters either someone from past who just suddenly pop into the story and show their awesome new powers they got in the time they were out. or some random top D class rankers who are hundreds of years old still being D rankers, who knows what they were doing all this time.
The thing thats been bugging me the most as of late is these frigging lame explanations behind those supposedly amazing powers -
I'm just leaving the rating 8/10 in hopes that this would redeem itself after this arc. But my hopes are slim. As for this arc's score its 1/10.
