I think that it tends to be like that. When you have a story you have the background for (like how Fumetsu started), the author just tried to resolve issues there - the things that would plague an immortal, like death of loved ones, finding a purpose, trying to understand the meaning of life, etc. But when the story got to the modern age the author tried to resolve a different question, namely "what if you refuse?" And it can only be resolved in the future, and in that background there's things that we wouldn't understand like immortal people, or just a class system, etc. What I am trying to say is that the question being resolved at this moment in the story is just weird, like a reluctant immortal is a contradiction but a logic outcome, and that the future "as a place" is just weird because the only way we can conceptualize it is "our modern problems in a far more exaggerated and inhuman way".
