    I disagree. What she's doing is not "being boyish" because her father was a bum and it's manly to be a bum. She's being assertive and self-possessed because she saw her father's bad behavior and wanted to fight against it. You're getting too bound up in the labels of feminine and masculine. Her behavior is like this because she saw that her father was not reliable and she wanted to be reliable and cool. She saw her mother curl into herself because her father wouldn't do anything and decided that kind of thing wouldn't happen to her because she would take care of herself and other people without giving too much of herself in the way that her mom did.
