    I think many backgrounds are in large part photographs, sometimes in combination with 3D assets. And then just some minor details drawn on. It's pretty common to do this, but I can't say that they're pulling off the technique all that well. Everything looks washed out and lacking in detail, because they have to maximize their filters so it doesn't *actually* look like photographs.
