BUT... I do have one theory of why those "letters" appear in its targets... it may be some sort of projection from its eyes that works more like a "targeting laser", when it closes the eye that is used to project it launches a wave of energy.
Now why does it look like "letters"... your guess is as good as mine.
You know... this series had a much more interesting premise when Kafka was working as a worker for kaiju disposal, and if the author wanted to put some action... he could have made a two-front story where we would focus on both the work and logistics of cleaning kaiju remains and the hunting of those creatures... but we got a pretty baseline shounen story in the end.
