    Retsuden is a trilogy of novels. One for Kakashi, Sasuke, & Naruto in that order. Sasuke's was so popular that they decided to make a manga of it.

    The novel begins with him in prison so they definitely wrote the first chapter so readers would have enough context. So while I haven't read Kakashi's yet, I think it's safe to assume it isn't neccessary.
