It's your usual "old man is secretly OP as fuck" but it's done properly. Side characters all have their own motivations, there's no fighting for the D or evil people being evil just for the sake of it (not counting the thief group chief since he literally just appeared).
Even two of the "cliche characters" that don't believe that MC is OP actually have proper reasons to not believe him and realistically change their mind when proven wrong.
It was quite nice to see that MC isn't also know-it-all. He doesn't know magic, he doesn't know the basic of adventuring and explorations - he learns the very basics of it after he comes to the city. He just knows how to swing sword and is a really nice guy.
The art is nice (especially liked the scene of blacksmith seeing MCs "potential"), fight scenes are fluid enough to not get lost (even if some aerial manoeuvrers don't make sense) and the cast is colourful enough to be engaging.
Now I don't live there but I believe that this has something to do with the situation you described.
