I don't usually write reviews, but after reading many of the reviews for this manga, I felt compelled to address a few points. This might contain minor spoilers regarding the characters' mindsets and specific actions. Also, expect a slight rant.

    Story (6/10):

The story revolves around a modern girl sent back in time by an evil queen who intends to take her body for a ritual. The protagonist finds herself surrounded by physically strong men of high social status. It's definitely a harem romance type of narrative.

    Art (8/10):

I actually liked the art. Although it progressively got messier, it suited the series' ambiance in a way that's hard to describe unless you read the manga. As someone who doesn't mind different types of art, even when it gets bad, I can still enjoy the series. However, not everyone may tolerate the art style. The beginning artwork is fantastic, with detailed designs, especially in the clothing.

    Characters (4/10):

This is where I believe the manga significantly lacks, and it's also why I didn't enjoy the series much. Many reviewers highlight how the MC differs from the typical weak female character. However, I see the MC as a stereotypical magical girl. She has a unique ability, making her special, but she fits the pattern of using that power to gain attention and secure her place next to her loved ones. In other words, she gains male characters' praise to stay where she is but still heavily relies on them for help.

Furthermore, although people say she is strong-willed and smart, she often lets male characters take advantage of her. IT'S RIDICULOUS. Despite having powers, she still allows herself to appear weak against men! For most of the series, she makes it acceptable for men to manipulate her until she realizes too late that she could be raped! In many instances, she is on the verge of getting raped until another male character or side characters intervene. Another point: she saves some people with her powers nonchalantly, gaining excessive joy and surprise from others, yet she is always saved by some male character! Whether it's against enemies or sexual assault, she is almost always saved by men. Her special ability seems like a facade that many readers don't uncover, revealing her as the weak girl always being saved.

There's little character development among the male characters. They become nicer to the MC, initially seeing her as a helpless female. They start respecting her more but continually show their sexual desires for her. There was little development in their outlook on her as a sex toy, though they do let her have more say in what goes on.

The evil characters lack significant character development. The queen, specifically, doesn't learn from her actions. It's sad because you barely learn much about her. She has the same level of development as at the manga's beginning.

    Enjoyment (5/10):

I honestly didn't enjoy the manga very much. The art was good, not consistent, but good. However, the characters really downplayed the series; characters are supposed to be the main focus to make a series great, and I didn't see great character development. Poor messages were portrayed, where sexual harassment was an acceptable occurrence from both genders, though less so from females. Other readers saying the female character was "different" because she was smart and strong saddened me, showing they didn't see depth in the characters' psychological mindset. Maybe I'm overanalyzing, but it was too obvious not to point out. Though I found myself wanting to read it to pass the time, there were instances where I just mindlessly read for the plot to continue, tolerating some degrading actions from characters.

    Overall (5/10):

If you want to pass the time and read about a girl traveling through time experiencing constant danger, it's an interesting series. Those who enjoy shoujo, romance, some smut, and historical manga would likely like it. If you enjoy light-hearted, mindless reading, then read this. However, if you seek true character development and strong, smart female main characters, don't read this because you'll see the female character is only praised for her powers and actions by males, not necessarily for her true independence.

Personally, I liked how you could mindlessly read and understand the plot without problem. It was the character development I hoped for that let me down. I get that the manga is historical, so some actions are more acceptable according to the time period. However, more character development all around would reduce criticism of mindless and sporadic actions. Also, if the female character grew into one of significant independence and self-reliance, the actions brought upon her would be seen as more sympathetic.

Thank you for taking the time to read this! (:

I will always respect the choice to set your historical epic romance in an empire that, until the late 19th century, we weren't entirely sure existed and about which we still know very little. I adore the Hittites and everything related to them, and deep down, I'm just envious that I can't use Yuri's technique to learn the oldest Indo-European language we have written records of. It's possible that I am somewhat of a historical linguistics enthusiast. Anyway...

I cannot claim to be unbiased. I am incredibly biased. This is one of the first manga I ever read, so it definitely gets some nostalgia points from me. I should probably give it an 8, maybe a 7, but every time I try to change it, I simply can't bring myself to do it. To be fair, I am allowed to have a biased opinion about a manga; it's not the end of the world. But it doesn't make for a very helpful review. I repeat, this is a biased review, and I love this manga.

I have reread this entire manga twice, making it three total reads, and I love both the characters and the historic elements of the story. I'm not sure if I can genuinely recommend it, but if you're looking for a manga with truly beautiful art, give this one a try. If you still enjoy it after the first few chapters, you'll likely appreciate the whole thing. Conversely, if you don't like it after the first few chapters, you probably won't. Other than introducing a few new characters, it pretty much sticks to its form throughout.

    Story: 10
I thoroughly enjoyed the narrative of Red River/Anatolia Story. It was captivating, intriguing, occasionally humorous, and suspenseful throughout its entirety.

    Art: 8
While the artwork isn't perfect in my opinion, the artist did an excellent job conveying the characters' emotions and their interactions with one another.

    Characters: 10
Almost every character in this manga has a well-developed background, and both minor and major characters are given equal importance. I became emotionally invested in nearly every character, even some of the villains, as you come to understand that each has their own reasons for their actions, no matter how monstrous they may seem. The character development in this manga is also outstanding.

    Enjoyment: 10
To me, enjoyment is the most crucial factor in determining whether a manga is good or not. If it isn't enjoyable, then it can't be considered good. And oh boy, is this manga enjoyable! You'll find yourself on the edge of your seat throughout the entire series.

    Overall: 10
This manga is undoubtedly one of my favorites. I found it so compelling that it has earned a place in my top three mangas. I urge you not to hesitate—head straight to your local bookstore or favorite manga streaming site and dive into this incredible story. You won't be disappointed.

    Overall enjoyment: Top notch

This is hands down my favorite Japanese series of all time. In fact, among my top 10 media experiences ever, this would be included. Note that I said media - I'm considering video games like LoL, movies like The Lion King, and books like The Silmarillion.

I don't expect anyone else to love this manga as much as I do, but give this 3000-page story a chance. If you're a fan of isekai or romance genres, I guarantee this series will surprise you with its enjoyment factor.

Now if I have your interest, please read on for more details!

    Framework:

With the popularity of SAO, people often forget that isekai stories used to focus on female protagonists, frequently featuring strong female leads. Don't let the shojo label deter you; the story is beautifully written and packed with action.

This is a piece of historical fiction involving being trapped in an ancient world (3500 years in the past). We get a first-person perspective of the hero's journey as our main heroine navigates the dangers of political intrigue within the Hittite royal court.

    Story:

The primary plot revolves around our heroine, Yuri Suzuki, who is transported to the Hittite Empire at the peak of its power. She was meant to be sacrificed by an evil queen who wanted her son to become the next king.

Yuri’s life is saved by Kail Mursili (King Mursili II, real first name unrecorded), the third prince of the royal court. Through sharp wit, bravery, and fierce resolve, Yuri and Kail must thwart the evil queen's numerous assassination attempts while ruling one of the most powerful empires of the ancient world.

The story is highly action-packed, but don't expect any DBZ-level power-ups or similar elements. Everyone is a regular human, so it focuses more on outsmarting the queen. Of course, it’s not a suspense thriller either, so it emphasizes emotional impact over strategic plotting.

    Historical:

Chie Sunohara conducted extensive research on the Hittite Empire. Almost everything aligns with one historical theory or another about the Hittites. The main difference is our time-traveling heroine, whose actions are inspired by Puduhepa but whose timeline places her as Gassuliwaya (one generation ahead).

Just this alone merits special praise—that such a well-crafted story can be told without straying far from historical facts.

    Characterization:

This might be the manga's strongest aspect. When it comes to shojo romances, we often think of shallow character development, forced explanations, and illogical decisions.

    Not here though.

Yuri doesn’t blindly accept the status quo, nor does she expect others to adopt her ways without taking personal initiative. Yuri isn't the perfect princess; she has insecurities, and some of her actions don't go as planned.

Similarly, Yuri reacts realistically to events around her. Traumatic experiences don't vanish overnight. Any conflict between Yuri and Kail doesn't magically resolve—there’s usually a good reason for love, forgiveness, anger, etc.

While we do get glimpses into other characters, the manga primarily offers a first-person view. We see things mostly through Yuri’s eyes, so while Yuri is fully developed, the supporting cast remains somewhat incomplete. And that’s perfectly fine—in real life, we only truly know our own psyche.

    Cons:

The main issue is the villain, the evil queen Nadia. We only get tiny insights into why she so desperately wants her son to be king. Her second-in-command, Urhi Shalma, also never fully explains his unwavering devotion to Nadia.

However, within the story, this limitation is acknowledged. Yuri herself asks Urhi why he acts as he does since it seems to offer him no benefit. Nadia also makes it clear she has no intention of revealing her true motivations.

Additionally, this is a 1995 manga. Its art style is stunning, especially considering it was created 20 years ago. However, its age does show occasionally.

Okay, so I disliked this story so much it prompted me to write my first ever review on this website. Honestly, I cannot fathom how people have given this series such glowing reviews. Although I only managed to get through five chapters, it's a clear indication of just how poor this story is.

I initially picked up this manga because I'd heard wonderful things about it. I was excited since I've been binge-reading historical-themed mangas recently, and this one was next on my list. However, I could barely make it through the content.

Firstly, the story is dreadfully predictable. I can almost guess the ending already, and frankly, I'm not interested in reading 90+ more chapters to find out. The near-rape scene in the first chapter nearly made my eyes roll back into my head, and the following few chapters weren't any better.

Secondly, the characters are incredibly bland, and their actions are equally predictable. There were far too many overused character tropes for my liking, and none of them stood out as unique. I could probably predict what some of the characters introduced in the first five chapters would do throughout the rest of the story, but I don't feel compelled to read further to see if I'm right.

You might say, "Maybe if you read more than FIVE chapters, your opinion would change," but honestly, no, I don't think so. Unless there's a significant overhaul of the characters' personalities and the overall storyline in the upcoming chapters, I doubt I'll come to like this manga. So, I apologize if this is your all-time favorite story, but I just can't bring myself to continue.

Perhaps if I had come across this story when I was younger (maybe around twelve?), I might have felt differently. But now, I simply can't get past its flaws.

To end on a positive note, I did enjoy the artwork very much. I have a soft spot for the late 90s early 00s style, so at least the manga has that going for it.

Maybe my next review will be a positive one (though it's unlikely, as I rarely have the motivation to write reviews). I'll try, though. Maybe.

An incredibly amazing manga, if I might say so myself.

I absolutely love this manga and am genuinely surprised by the lack of reviews. I found it to be brilliant and thoroughly entertaining. The story revolves around a girl who is transported back in time to ancient Egypt by an evil queen. It sounds cliché, but surprisingly, it was fresh and engaging. Red River masterfully blends various genres into one cohesive manga that will undoubtedly keep you entertained. Action, romance (definitely!), drama, and even sadism – this manga has it all. It does a fantastic job of drawing readers into its plots. Reading Red River made me want to punch some characters, kiss them, hug them, cry for them, cheer for them, or throw my oversized textbooks at them (which are big enough to knock out a bear), among other things.

The art style of Red River is somewhat old-fashioned, yet still charming and not off-putting. In fact, I thought the art was quite good most of the time. At the beginning, when the setting was modern-day Japan, I found the art to be merely satisfactory. But once the story shifted to Ancient Egypt, the art transformed and became absolutely gorgeous. The ancient Egyptian clothing was everything I hoped for and more. The artist excelled at depicting different types of attire, from peasant clothes to flashy outfits, all drawn with the same enchanting style. Additionally, the characters were beautifully illustrated, and there were moments when certain characters were so stunning, they made me swoon.

The characters! I can't even begin to describe how much I enjoyed them. They were all wonderfully unique and realistic in their own way, each possessing their own charm. Character development was clear and excellently executed. The main protagonist evolved from a feeble young girl into someone formidable, which I loved. During the darker, dramatic moments, it was surprising to discover who the real villains were. New antagonists would appear unexpectedly, keeping me on my toes. Characters I didn't expect to be evil turned out to be, while those I suspected weren't (except for the main antagonists). The main male character was incredibly sweet. He was like a lovestruck puppy, yet strong and steadfast, making him a wonderful character to root for. Honestly, I can't adequately express how much I enjoyed these characters, so please forgive the somewhat incoherent rambling in this section.

Maybe I'm at a loss for words or experiencing writer's block, so please don't judge this manga based on my choppy and possibly subpar review. Despite my limited writing skills, I truly, honestly, and purely recommend this manga. Whether it's for the unique plot, the beautiful art, the fantastic characters, or simply because it's such a sweet romance that it gives you both a toothache and fills your heart with love, you won't regret reading Red River.

When you start reading the initial chapters, it seems like a typical tale of a girl in distress who gets rescued by her hero, leading to a happily-ever-after scenario. However, this assumption is surprisingly incorrect; the story goes far beyond your expectations. The heroine in this manga isn't your run-of-the-mill protagonist. She transcends the traditional role of a heroine despite her tomboyish nature, stubbornness, insecurities, and fears. She confronts and overcomes every obstacle that comes her way in this ancient era. It's not just the main characters who shine as heroes; even the side characters with the smallest roles contribute significantly.

The unexpected twists and turns in the narrative keep you hooked and transport you through various genres: from war to romance, from tragedy to fantasy, all within a historical setting. While the artwork may have some imperfections, the compelling storyline makes up for it entirely.

"Red River" stands out as one of the finest historical stories ever crafted. It is highly recommended to explore other works by this brilliant author.

I absolutely adore this manga. For months, I've been reaching out to Viz Media and various anime networks, urging them to adapt this into an anime. The characters are incredibly well-developed; some are so despicable that you can't help but feel a bit of pity for them. What captivates me the most is witnessing the heroine's transformation from a terrified little girl in a world not her own to a truly deserving queen. The narrative delves deeply into politics and warfare, yet the heroine isn't merely waiting at home for her man to return. No, she's leading the charge on the frontlines, spreading compassion to everyone she encounters, even those trying to kill her. She's no pushover; she has her limits, but she's so remarkably composed, as are all the other characters. The story will keep you on your toes with its unexpected twists. This is an absolute MUST READ! Usually, I see something once and don't revisit it, but THIS ONE... I've read it over countless times. It is sheer PERFECTION!!!

I'm a huge fan of shoujo and romance manga, especially those that make my heart race as if I'm living the story myself. Even now, I enjoy tales of princes and damsels in distress falling in love. Perhaps it's because, in reality, there are no princes, but fiction lets our imaginations run wild, making it all the more thrilling.

However, what I detest most are characters who are supposedly brave yet degrade themselves when the opposite gender is involved. Sadly, Yuri, the heroine, embodies this flaw. Maybe it's due to the historical setting, but the fact that she nearly gets raped repeatedly doesn't excuse the horror. The men in the manga show no respect for Yuri's opinions, thinking only of sexual gratification. As a woman, I feel humiliated and disgusted by each character's glaring flaws. Moreover, the heroine is weak around men and never learns dignity. She presents herself well publicly, but I am shocked by how accepting she is when sexually assaulted. Kail isn't much better; in one chapter, he almost rapes Yuri despite her protests, stopping only when servants intervened. What kind of man tries to rape someone he claims to love? I once loved Kail, but his assault on Yuri left me appalled.

Furthermore, there's no character development. Especially the evil queen—she never learns from her mistakes, constantly killing people but failing to eliminate her true targets. She's foolish and should have died long ago. The king is equally foolish for not recognizing his wife's evil nature. Her "nonexistent" love story does not evoke pity, either.

Overall, this manga was disappointing. Each character let me down. :)

Well, I have always been a big fan of shoujo manga and older works. In this case, the combination of old charm with shoujo has proven to be exceptional.

At first, I didn't enjoy the story, art, or characters, but soon after, I found myself loving everything about it. The reason for this transformation is how the mangaka draws you in with her strong characters and engaging plot.

You can clearly see how much Shinohara Chie has strived to make every aspect feel real and believable. Her stunning artwork adds an even more special touch to the manga. You can notice small details on the clothes and buildings, which enhance the overall experience.

The main character is somewhat typical, trying to be nice to everyone, but that also happens to be one of her strongest attributes.

Overall, I truly enjoyed the manga thanks to its amazing art and compelling story. It took me quite some time to return to reality after immersing myself in Anatolia.

If you're looking for something unique and incredible, you must read this story. You won't be disappointed.

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS UP TO CHAPTER 13.

I truly don't comprehend the overwhelmingly positive reviews for this manga.

I was searching for a historical manga with an engaging romance, but what I've encountered in Red River is rather absurd. Firstly, regarding the female protagonist: WHY? Her actions are beyond my understanding. Sure, she's fifteen years old, but after reading thirteen chapters, there has been no development. Additionally, it seems Yuuri forgets about her first love and family because of the male lead. Yes, she wants to be with Kail, but they fall in love in just two chapters? Their relationship lacks substance and foundation.

I also want to mention that Tito's death feels unnecessary. It had no logical reason behind it. He was set to become the leader of an important tribe, yet he chose to sacrifice himself for a stranger? And his family felt indebted and decided to serve Yuuri... why? For the sake of the plot. Nothing more.

The story is laughable. I don't intend to offend anyone who enjoyed it, but I found it incredibly boring. A girl with extraordinary blood ends up in the Hittite Empire and initially doesn't know how to ride a horse or wield a dagger, but suddenly becomes a great leader, the Goddess of War, and the heroine. She kills a formidable character (in the early chapters) for revenge, and instead of feeling remorse, she completely forgets about it and decides to participate in wars for no clear reason? Everyone agrees despite women not being allowed in combat? Excuse me, what?

Sorry, but I can't continue reading. Perhaps the plot improves significantly as it progresses. Maybe the characters' development becomes remarkable, but I simply can't go on. I won't read something I don't enjoy, and I wouldn't recommend this manga even in my wildest dreams.

In conclusion, I want to clarify that this review is entirely subjective. While I acknowledge the historical events depicted may be accurate, I chose to overlook them for this critique, so please keep that in mind.

Anatolia Story revolves around an ordinary girl who is transported back in time and ends up being used as a sacrifice by an evil queen, whose aim is to make her son the prince. Throughout her journey, she faces numerous challenges and gets kidnapped multiple times, only to be rescued each time by none other than her very own "PRINCE" Kail. :) The two develop a deep love for each other and must confront some of the most horrifying dilemmas. The queen repeatedly tries to kill Yuri after discovering that she is actually a goddess. In my view, the story is packed with suspense and abundant romance, perfect for those who enjoy such themes. The author's writing style makes readers feel as if they are characters within the story themselves, evoking emotions so strong that it's hard not to shed a tear :'( It’s an incredible read for many people.
