saihamaru: From my understanding, it works like other instant death spells in (some) RPGs - in exchange of being an insta-kill, you get none of the XP you would've gotten if you fought normally. And it seems he was never a frontline fighter, and had to stay back and keep reviving fallen army members to make basically suicidal battle tactics actually work, so he never killed anyone without the insta-death spells.

For the food thing... no idea. Maybe something undead developed along with the whole "not smelling like a corpse" thing that was briefly mentioned?
