Ayanami's Begleiter, who has only been mentioned in the first drama CD so far, is the one to whom Ayanami said, "There is only one Begleiter I have loved, which is you." Many believe that the officer appearing in Ayanami's memory, who says "Only you are my king, Ayanami-sama" in manga chapter 26, is Yukikaze. This belief stems from Hyuuga not using formal speech when talking with Ayanami. However, we still do not know this officer's name. In a one-shot manga illustrated by the authors of 07-Ghost titled Begleiter, it is shown that Ayanami had a Begleiter before he became the Chief of Staff. This Begleiter died protecting Ayanami in battle. Since then, Ayanami has been rejecting anyone who applies for the position. When Hyuuga said, "He (Yukikaze) isn't the only one who cares about you," Ayanami warned Hyuuga by pointing his sword at him. This highlights the deep emotional connection Ayanami had with his former Begleiter and his protective stance towards those close to him.
