The protagonist of the story is a former slave captured by the Barsburg Empire and regarded as the military academy's star pupil. His homeland was the former Kingdom of Raggs, and he grew up as an orphan in a church. It is later revealed that Teito had been entrusted with the Eye of Mikhail during the Empire's invasion of his home country, and he is the son of the former king of Raggs. At the start of the manga, Teito makes a promise with his best (and only) friend, Mikage, that they would die together. Tragically, Mikage sacrifices his life to save Teito from the Empire. Shaken, Teito swears revenge despite Mikage's last wishes. At the 7th District church, he begins studying to become a priest to gain advantages such as free room and board at inns across the Empire and less stringent border inspections on his path to vengeance. Teito bears a slave tattoo on his back from when he was first captured and wears a slave collar around his neck, placed there by Ayanami.
