Yotaro is a young boy who appears frail and is unable to go outside, despite his mother's efforts to encourage him. Frequently tired and seemingly sickly, Yotaro spends most of his time in bed, avoiding any form of activity. However, he harbors a dream: to own a panda of his very own. One day, his wish comes true when Genma, wandering in panda form, is discovered by Yotaro's mother and brought home. Initially reluctant, Genma decides to stay when he realizes how well he is treated, especially with the abundance of food.
A concerned Ranma eventually tracks down Genma at the house and, in her female form, enters the home. She is appalled by the laziness displayed by both Genma and Yotaro. At first, Ranma attempts to take Genma back by force but soon resorts to more subtle methods, trying to persuade Yotaro to venture outdoors. During this time, Ranma uncovers that Yotaro is not actually sick; rather, he is simply very lazy and unwilling to leave the comfort of his home. It is only when Ranma forcibly takes Genma-panda from the house that Yotaro finally goes outside, chasing Ranma all the way back to the Tendo dojo.
Though initially appearing ill, it becomes clear that Yotaro's sickness is merely a facade to hide his laziness and reluctance to go outside. Despite this, he is an energetic boy who is not easily persuaded to give up his comfortable lifestyle.
