Akane is far from delicate, and her vibrant, life-loving personality shines through in everything she does. Though she moves gracefully, she's surprisingly heavy in water.
Her eyes are dark blue (brown in the anime), almost black. She has an ordinary nose and a cute smile. Akane's navy blue hair is cut short in a somewhat boyish style. Initially, this was an accident, but she grew to love it after realizing that long hair suited her sister Kasumi better than herself.
She dislikes being called a "tomboy," "ugly," or "uncute." These are the quickest ways to get hit by Akane. The second fastest way is to grope her. She detests perverts and doesn't like being touched inappropriately. However, the usual perverts of Nerima seem to escape her wrath more easily than Ranma, who often ends up getting hit because he seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Akane is a passionate young woman. She values her independence and resents being told how to behave or act. Above all, she stays true to herself.
Despite what some may think, Akane is quite complex. Her attitude varies depending on the person—she can be sweet and good-natured with a quick temper, but around Ranma, she comes off as a man-hating, violent tomboy. First impressions matter greatly to her.
Akane struggles with acting feminine because she had few female role models growing up, aside from Kasumi, whom she initially tried to emulate. Activities traditionally associated with Japanese femininity, such as tea ceremonies and gymnastics, are challenging for her. Even societal norms about how a girl should behave in a relationship, she defies.
Akane has lived in the Tendou Dojo with her two sisters and father her entire life. Her mother passed away when she was young, so most of her childhood was spent being raised by her eldest sister, Kasumi, and her father, Soun.
