Vash exhibits dual personalities. Typically, he exaggerates foolish traits to appear harmless and conceal his true identity; for example, showing an almost obsessive fondness for doughnuts and once introducing himself as "Valentinez Alkalinella Xifax Sicidabohertz Gombigobilla Blue Stradivari Talentrent Pierre Andri Charton-Haymoss Ivanovich Baldeus George Doitzel Kaiser III." Vash's reputation as "The Humanoid Typhoon" is legendary, along with the damage and chaos linked to his presence. However, when those around him are in danger, Vash becomes fully focused and controlled.
Vash is a complex character—essentially a walking contradiction. He can be a womanizer at times, and other times a gentleman. Sometimes he acts cowardly, yet other times he displays immense bravery. He is a wanted man but wouldn't harm a soul.

Despite his age, he still hasn't found peace within himself. A central conflict in the series stems from the differences between Vash and his twin brother, Millions Knives, particularly their views on humanity. Although both have endured similar experiences and torments, Vash remains hopeful and loving toward humans, whereas Knives has developed a deep-seated hatred for their kind. Their personalities also differ significantly: Vash cannot tolerate loneliness, while Knives embraces his solitude and prefers no company.
Because Vash refuses to kill any of his opponents, he often endures persistent enemies and their revenge attempts. Consequently, his body is marked by numerous large scars, missing flesh replaced by metal mesh, and stitch marks.
