Tōhru Shirō (née Magami), a member of the Magami clan, is Kamui's mother and shadow sacrifice. She perishes in a fire that engulfs the house she and Kamui lived in on Okinawa. In the anime, her death is explained as a means to postpone or mitigate the disasters awaiting Kamui leading up to the promised day. In the manga, her sacrifice prevents the premature destruction of the planet. Hinoto attributes Tōhru's fiery demise to the intensified effects of global warming.
Initially, Tōhru was meant to give birth to the first Sacred Sword, but Saya took her place. At the moment of her death, Tōhru was concluding a phone call with the former Chairman of Clamp Academy when the consequences of her role as Kamui's/Earth's shadow sacrifice were triggered, causing her flesh to ignite. Her death occurs just before the beginning of the first manga volume and prompts Kamui's return to Tokyo after a six-year absence.
In the movie, Tōhru dies similarly by being burned alive but manages to give Kamui his Sacred Sword while dying. Her last words instruct Kamui to go to Tokyo for the final battle and inform him about the Dragons of Heaven and the Dragons of Earth. In the X Tarot set, she and her sister are represented by The Tower.
