Tokaki is a Byakko Celestial Warrior married to the beautiful and kind Subaru. Known for his lecherous nature, Tokaki never misses an opportunity to comment on any attractive young woman he encounters, including Miaka. Despite his flirtatious behavior, he loves Subaru deeply and would do anything to protect her. He also has a strong bond with Tatara and considers Tamahome as a son. Although he is 109 years old, he only appears to be 19.
Tokaki's abilities include teleportation, knowledge of pressure points, and using earrings as weapons. Due to his habit of flirting with other women, Subaru threw him out of their home. This led him to travel across the four realms, during which he encountered a young Tamahome in Konan. Recognizing Tamahome as a Celestial Warrior, Tokaki trained him in martial arts so that he could one day protect his priestess.
They meet again when the Suzaku Warriors travel to Sairō to find Byakko's Shinzaho, but this reunion is far from joyful. Seeing Miaka and Tamahome's love for each other, Tokaki, drawing from his own experiences, advises them to end their relationship willingly rather than face a forced separation like Tatara and Suzuno. To this end, he tries to encourage a romantic relationship between his adopted daughter Xi-Fang and Tamahome.
It is speculated that Tokaki and Subaru die together towards the end of Fushigi Yûgi due to the damaging effects of a spell Subaru cast on their bodies. However, they are mentioned in the novel version of Eikoden, set ten years after the original story.
Tokaki's true name is Ranva Ham, born under the star Legs.
