Nakago, known as Ayuru Gi and born under the star Heart, is the leader of the Seiryuu warriors and the main antagonist in Fushigi Yuugi. He is both merciless and charismatic, eliminating those who are no longer useful to him and skillfully manipulating others to do his bidding.
Nakago's abilities as a Celestial Warrior surpass those of the Suzaku and Seiryū warriors. He can manipulate chi, which allows him to become psychokinetic, fire energy blasts, and create force fields. In combat, he wields a whip and sword effectively.
As Kutou's highest-ranking general, Nakago commands two-thirds of the country's army. The last survivor of the Hin Tribe, which was destroyed by Kutou's Emperor, Nakago witnessed his mother being raped by soldiers and subsequently killed them and his own mother using his newly awakened powers. Recognized as a Celestial Warrior, he was brought to the Emperor, where his beauty led to sexual abuse. Despite this, he mastered his abilities and became a loyal soldier, all the while secretly planning to betray the Emperor.
Upon finding Yui, Nakago manipulates her by making her believe she was raped so that she would depend on him. He uses her to gain the power of Seiryuu, initially intending to take over the world. After learning about Yui and Miaka's real world, he shifts his goal to conquering it, aspiring to be a god who controls everything. Using his powers, he travels to the real world to attempt a takeover. Realizing her mistake, Yui frees Suzaku, and Miaka uses her wishes to seal Seiryuu, returning Nakago to normal. He is ultimately killed by Tamahome.
Yu Watase has mentioned multiple times in chapter notes and in the second installment of the omake "The Tale of the Forbidden Women's Hot Spring" from the series 1 OVA that Nakago is her favorite character.
