Takumi rarely displays emotion and is best friends with Itsuki Takeuchi, an avid racing fan. Takumi works part-time at a gas station alongside Itsuki and Iketani, a member of the local racing team, the Akina Speed Stars. Initially, both Itsuki and Iketani doubt Takumi's driving abilities due to his apparent disinterest in cars and racing. The only one who suspects Takumi has exceptional driving skills is Yuuichi, the gas station owner. This suspicion arises during an episode where Takumi discusses drifting techniques with Iketani and Itsuki. In reality, Takumi has extensive experience on the touge, having driven his father's AE86 Trueno for five years since he was 13, delivering tofu to a hotel every morning at 4 a.m. Unbeknownst to Takumi, his father has subtly trained him to develop advanced driving skills. Bunta aside, Takumi's driving technique is unmatched on Akina. His ability to win races against more powerful cars with his AE86 Trueno is proof of his exceptional skills. With daily practice and over five years of experience on Akina, Takumi can adapt quickly to any race scenario. One key aspect of his skill is his ability to visualize the road mentally, compensating for poor visibility even in the darkest mountain passes. He relies more on instinct than intellectual reasoning, and his father taught him the mizutoshi technique, which has led to many victories. Initially, Takumi wasn't formally part of any team, although he was loosely associated with the Akina Speed Stars. Later, he joins Project D, a super-team created by Ryosuke Takahashi aimed at capturing all the time records in Japan. Despite this, he has yet to beat his father in a race. Takumi appears docile and weak-minded but is actually stubborn and strong-willed. Yuuichi notes that Takumi's behavior mirrors his father's. However, when behind the wheel, Takumi exhibits tremendous concentration and instinctive insight, often surprising his opponents. Keisuke asks Takumi to become professional racers together, leading Takumi to aspire to become a professional racer with Keisuke. They become rivals sharing the same dream. In *MF Ghost*, Takumi travels to England at age 20, participating in rally races and showcasing his prowess on paved surfaces. He wins his first championship in his third year of racing and earns the nickname "Flying Japanese." He signs a contract with Toyota to compete in the WRC, but during a test drive, the car's driveshaft breaks, causing it to fall into a valley. This accident results in serious injuries, ending his career as a professional racer. He then becomes an instructor at the RDRS driving school, teaching Kanata among others. His teaching method involves giving students vague tasks and allowing them to find their own answers through practical experience.
