Bunta Fujiwara owns a tofu shop in Akina and is the father of Takumi. He was once the top downhill racer on Mt. Akina but now focuses on guiding Takumi's racing development. Bunta originally drove the legendary AE86 that holds the fastest downhill time record at Akina. To train Takumi, every morning when he delivers tofu, Bunta gives him a cup of water to place in the drink holder, ensuring he drives smoothly without spilling any water or breaking the tofu.
Bunta remains the fastest downhill racer in Akina, as shown early in the series when he easily drifts around a corner with Yuuichi in the passenger seat while lighting a cigarette. In Season Four, after Takumi begins using the AE86 more frequently, Bunta test drives a Subaru Impreza WRX STI Type R Version V on Akina and defeats Takumi, instilling a fascination for 4WD cars in his son. Bunta buys the car but initially keeps this a secret from Takumi. He later reveals himself as the driver and alternates between letting Takumi use the Impreza and the Eight-Six for deliveries, aiming to show Takumi the potential of modern cars and the characteristics of 4WD systems.
(Trivia: There is confusion about Bunta's car. It is a Subaru Impreza WRX STi Type R version 5. Many mistake it for the legendary Subaru Impreza 22B because Bunta’s Impreza uses an "aftermarket" STi Sport Bumper, which looks almost identical to the 22B stock front bumper.)
