Waku was an energetic and confident young boy who embodied the typical shōnen protagonist. Once a gifted soccer player, he enjoyed considerable popularity among his peers. His dream was to become a professional athlete, a goal his friends believed was within his reach due to his natural talent. However, everything changed when Waku discovered that his father, a salaryman, had once been a promising soccer player like him, even competing at the national level in his youth. This revelation shook Waku's confidence; if someone so similar to him hadn't succeeded, how could he? He quit soccer, a decision that led him away from the sport and into a summer class where he eventually became a pilot. Chosen as the first child pilot, Waku fought alongside his companions. After their victory over Bayonet, they celebrated on Zearth’s shoulder. During this celebration, Ushiro patted Waku on the back, causing him to fall into the ocean. Initially, it seemed Ushiro had accidentally pushed him, but the truth was more tragic: Waku had died the moment his time as a pilot ended. His chair, symbolically, was a simple plastic folding chair. While the manga does not specify the number of casualties, the anime reveals there were 2,343 victims.
