Aizawa, known within the investigation team by his alias Aihara, opts to stay with the police force instead of leaving with the rest of the team when L offers them the choice to quit. Despite this, he continues to support the investigation team as needed. After L's death, Aizawa rejoins the team, working under Light. Upon discovering that the 13-day rule associated with the Death Note is false, he starts to suspect that Light might be Kira and reaches out to Near. Aizawa provides crucial information to Near, enabling him to deduce Kira's true identity—Light. Near briefly detains Aizawa at the SPK headquarters before agreeing to release both him and Mogi. In the finale, Aizawa takes on the role of the leader of the investigation team. Aizawa has a family consisting of a wife, named Eriko, and two children, one of whom is a daughter named Yumi.
