Light Yagami was born on February 28, 1986. He is a third-year high school student at Daikoku Private Academy and also attends supplementary classes at Gamou Prep Academy. His father, Soichiro Yagami, is the head of the Police Force, while his mother is Sachiko Yagami, and he has a younger sister named Sayu Yagami.
In Spring 2004, Light enrolls as a first-year student at To-Oh University, where he becomes one of two freshman representatives alongside L. During a tennis match with L at To-Oh, it is revealed that Light was the junior high school tennis champion in 1999 and 2000. After winning in 2000, Light quit playing tennis to focus on his high school studies.
Nicknamed "Kira," Light uses the Death Note to create an ideal world governed by his sense of justice. Despite his frail appearance, he is highly athletic and adept at identifying opponents' weaknesses. As a genius, Light believes he alone is qualified to judge humanity and guide it towards a morally upright path.
After his plan fails, Light is shot by Matsuda and ultimately dies when Ryuk writes his name in the Death Note. This occurs on January 28, 2010, in the manga and January 28, 2013, in the anime.
