Shin, a Japanese pilot intended to work for Yamato Air Lines (YAL), was deceived into joining the Asranian air force during the country's civil war by his friend, Satoru Kanzaki. Kanzaki managed this by having Shin sign an Asranian military enlistment form while he was intoxicated at a local bar. At Area 88, Shin became the top ace but noticed himself losing his sense of humanity as time went on. Due to these experiences, Shin remained distant from most people within Area 88. However, he did form friendships with Mickey Simon, Kim Aoba, Kitori Palvanaff, Roundell, and his commanding officer, Saki Vashtal.
