Shampoo met Ranma when he, in his female form, and Genma, as a panda, dropped into a contest in a village of the Joketsuzoku ("Chinese Amazons"). The duo feasted on the prize meant for the winner of the village's martial arts contest. As the village champion, Shampoo challenged them. Ranma defeated her, but according to Amazon laws, if an outsider female defeats an Amazon female, the latter must give the "Kiss of Death" to the former, hunt her down, and kill her. Ranma and Genma managed to escape and settled in Nerima, Japan.
Tracking Ranma to Japan, Shampoo encountered him in his male form. He stopped her from attacking Akane by knocking the ball off her bonbori and knocking her out. If an Amazon female is defeated by a male outsider, she must marry him. Thus, Shampoo tried to marry male Ranma while still aiming to kill female Ranma until Ranma tricked her into believing that his male side was a disguise for his female side.
She returned to China to undergo specialized training from her great-grandmother Cologne. During this time, she fell into the Cursed Springs and received a cat curse. Learning that Ranma was also cursed, she went back to Japan to marry him. She works at the Neko Hanten with her great-grandmother as a waitress, cook, and delivery girl.
At first glance, Shampoo might seem like a bimbo due to her simplified speech. However, she has had limited time to learn Japanese after pursuing Ranma to his home country. This tendency may be exaggerated in Western translations, although her grammar doesn't improve after her second appearance. Despite this, she spoke fluent Chinese during a rooftop conversation with Mousse. In the Memorial Book, Shampoo is described as 'innocent and aggressive,' which accurately captures her cheerful, open, affectionate, hard-working, spiteful, sadistic, murderous, and manipulative personality. Her love for Ranma seems genuine despite her harsh treatment of others and sometimes even towards Ranma himself.
Trained in the martial arts techniques of the Joketsuzoku since birth, with Cologne as her personal instructor and the young female village champion, Shampoo is highly skilled in unarmed combat, especially in speed and acrobatics. She can casually walk through walls regularly. Despite this, she primarily uses a pair of bonbori as weapons but is also shown using swords, spears, bows, and various polearms. However, she doesn't compare to Ranma's skills and was easily overpowered whenever they seriously faced each other in one-on-one combat.
Beyond basic fighting ability, Shampoo has displayed knowledge of ventriloquism/voice imitation, shiatsu-induced unconsciousness, mind-control or memory loss, sleep-fighting, intuitive multi-step strategy, defense against enchanted herbs, Chinese cooking, and incredible tracking skills enabling her to hunt Ranma from rural China to eastern Japan. She also has access to minor magic equipment and can use her bike to bounce across the city. Her true strength may lie in her sheer versatility.
