Sayori is Yuuki's dorm-mate and best friend since middle school. Often referred to as Yori by Yuuki, she stands out as one of the few girls uninterested in the Night Class, finding them intimidating. She prefers someone from the Day Class. Sayori is highly observant, noticing when Yuuki is hurt or depressed.
After Hanabusa protects her from a Level D vampire serving Rido, Sayori discovers that Yuuki is a vampire. Despite this revelation, she remains loyal and more concerned about losing her best friend. Following recent events at Cross Academy, Aidou takes her to safety on Kaname's orders. After the attack, she defends Hanabusa against fearful Day Class girls. Remarkably, Sayori retains her memories and is among the few Day Class students aware of vampires' existence.
During the one-year time skip, Sayori forms a deeper friendship with Zero Kiryuu, leading some to speculate she might be his girlfriend. Kaito helps her sneak into a vampire ball in chapter 53, where Zero reacts strongly upon seeing her. Kaito and Zero promise to watch over her as she searches for Yuuki. Surprised by Yuuki's vampire form, Sayori marvels at her friend's transformation into a mature figure.
It is later revealed that Sayori's father is a Councillor in the Vampire Hunters Association. Post-Vampire Knight, Sayori and Hanabusa develop a romantic relationship leading to marriage and children, followed by grandchildren. Due to their differing lifespans, Hanabusa tries to convince Sayori to become a vampire, but she refuses, preferring to live as a human and eventually dying of old age. Before her death, she jokes about waiting for an invitation to Yuuki and Zero's wedding. A year after her passing, Zero and Yuuki officially become a couple.
