Kaname is a pureblood vampire who rescued Yuuki from a vampire attack when she was young. As the class president of the Night Class, he commands both fear and respect from his classmates. While Kaname maintains a cold and authoritative demeanor with other students, he consistently shows kindness and affection towards Yuuki. His deep care for her has always been evident since their first encounter, evolving into romantic love over time.
As a Pureblood, Kaname possesses the ability to control lesser vampires but chooses not to exert his power, earning admiration from Noble vampires. He shares the Chairman's vision of peace between humans and vampires. Together, they established the Night Class at Cross Academy, where Kaname's presence ensures order among the students.
Kaname is revealed to be Yuuki's older brother and the founder of the Kuran family lineage. Awakened by Rido Kuran using the blood of Haruka and Juri's firstborn child (also named Kaname and Yuuki's true elder sibling), he sealed himself within this child. To grow up as the child Haruka and Juri had lost, Kaname suppressed his past memories. However, these memories gradually resurfaced as he aged. Since Rido awakened him, Kaname cannot kill Rido, who remains his master.
To end the war between hunters and vampires, Kaname sacrificed his heart by throwing it into a hunter's furnace. Before his body began to disintegrate, he confessed his profound feelings for Yuuki and gave his blessing for her relationship with Zero. Hanabusa then froze Kaname's body in an ice coffin. It was later discovered that Yuuki was pregnant with Kaname's child, Ai, whom Zero decided to raise alongside Yuuki. Hanabusa eventually found Kaname's research on curing vampires and turning them into humans, which he completed. After 1000 years, Yuuki sacrificed herself to transform Kaname into a human. Currently, he lives under the care of Ai and Ren (Zero and Yuuki's child), listening to their stories and memories from the past millennium.
