Student number: 1
Sayo Aisaka, the ghost of a former student, is meek and helpless. She suffers from low self-esteem and struggles with being an ineffective ghost, often tripping despite not having feet and failing to scare anyone, usually scaring herself instead.
Almost everyone is unable to see her, and her presence goes largely unnoticed, though Takahata ensured she was included in the class registry, advising Negi not to change her seating arrangement.
For around 60 years since her death, Sayo has been friendless and lonely, making her desperate for companionship. She tries to talk to her classmates during the preparations for the School Festival.
The school dean once mentioned a girl who died around the time Sayo did, referring to her as his first love. It is assumed that he is talking about Sayo.
In the manga version, Sayo attempts to reveal herself during the Mahora School Festival to make friends, but her clumsy interactions are interpreted by the class as poltergeist activity, leading them to try to exorcise her. After Negi and Asakura calm everyone down, they accept Sayo as part of the class. Afterwards, Sayo can always be seen beside Asakura, acting as a sidekick, although only Asakura and those with magical abilities can see her initially. She eventually receives a palm-sized magic straw doll from Evangeline, which allows her to have a somewhat physical form and leave the school grounds.
