Ryouga stands out in a crowd due to his rugged appearance. He spends much of his time wandering, often feeling depressed because he has to spend so much of it alone in the wilderness. Even the slightest rain transforms him into a defenseless pig, vulnerable to both humans and animals. His most notable characteristic is his complete lack of direction, shared by his entire family. He struggles to follow even the simplest directions or create any legible maps, once running the wrong way at the start of a three-legged race.
This isn't due to a lack of motivation. For example, on his way to a date, he was supposed to follow the edge of a lake to reach a statue directly in front of him. Instead, Ryouga followed a brook and got lost again. In the anime, Maomolin the bakeneko possesses Ryouga to lead him towards the girl he loves, but even Maomolin struggles with navigation as much as Ryouga does. In real-world terms, he might be classified as suffering from an autistic limitation or brain damage in this area. It’s also possible that his lack of direction could be some form of family curse.
In the anime, this condition is exacerbated by Ryouga's ability to traverse vast distances in surprisingly little time on foot, though how he does this remains unknown. When combined with his poor sense of direction, it results in him having no idea where he is at any given moment, causing him to miss his destinations by large margins. For instance, he once tried to reach Hokkaido and ended up in Hong Kong instead. Luckily, he carries a backpack containing essentials for survival in the wild.
In the manga, this talent is not as heavily implied to be supernatural, at least beyond his comical tendency to appear unexpectedly. He seems to need longer travel times and hasn’t been explicitly shown to swiftly traverse continents under his own power. However, in his first appearance, he quickly overshot Tokyo by 500 miles twice within one or two days. With the aid of the Kinjakan, he also made it from Jusenkyo to Moscow and back while out to get dumplings in Beijing. His map once included a forest, a café, a road with a red car, the Tendo dojo, African tribesmen, China, and France.
Ryouga's family house is near Mount Fuji, where his dog Shirokuro (Checkers in English) and her puppies live. Given the Hibiki family’s directional issues, the house is usually empty. Ryouga generally leads a nomadic lifestyle, occasionally finding his way home. His dog, however, has no trouble finding her way and recognizes him in both human and pig forms. It has been mentioned that Ranma helped guide Ryouga home when they were in high school together.
The combination of his poor sense of direction and his curse has subjected Ryouga to frequent misery, often leaving him lonely and lost in the wilderness with tight food rations or at the mercy of predators. Initially introduced as a very angry and unapproachable individual, Ryouga is emotional and tends to follow his heart rather than his head, though he can use strategy when focused. He is emotionally fragile, straightforward, and naive, regularly feeling depressed, which fuels his chi projection. Generally shy, humble, and polite, especially around women, he is easily tricked and becomes extremely grateful and loyal to anyone who shows him kindness.
A recurring joke is that whenever female Ranma dons a disguise, no matter how transparent, Ryouga will still be fooled. Ranma has used this to find out about Ryouga’s training, tease him, or disrupt his dates with Akane to ruin his prospects.
