Rem is the Shinigami who initially provides Misa with her Death Note and Shinigami eyes. Like Ryuk, Rem has two Death Notes; she deliberately gives one to Misa. Rem acquires her second Death Note from Jealous, another Shinigami who died saving Misa's life, and believes it is only right to pass it on to Misa. Rem also inherits Jealous' affection for Misa and is quick to defend her, even if it means sacrificing her own life. This is evident when she expresses her distrust of Light, stating that if Misa dies prematurely, she will kill Light. In both the manga and anime, Rem informs Misa that she is actually a female Shinigami. However, in the second live-action film, this detail is not mentioned, leaving it ambiguous.
