Rai-Dei is a samurai dedicated to acquiring knowledge that can only be gained through encounters with death. He wields a unique sword equipped with a built-in gun, capable of firing from the hilt, and swings it with such force as to generate sonic blasts. In the anime, he displays frustration towards Vash for refusing to fight to kill, insisting on having "a real battle."
In the manga, Rai-Dei uses "roller skates" that enable him to achieve extraordinary speeds. He serves as the central character in the 7th chapter of Trigun Multiple Bullets, titled "Trigun: Rising," set before his induction into the Gung-ho-Guns. Within this chapter, Rai-Dei safeguards a small town against bandits and even trains a young girl in his fighting technique known as "Jigengiri Ittouryu." Initially portrayed as indifferent and ruthless, eliminating anyone who opposes him, Rai-Dei gradually develops affection for the townspeople. However, a tragic event pushes him back to his roots as an assassin, fueling his desire to cut through more flesh with his blade.
