The primary villain, Naraku (which literally translates to "underworld" or "hell"), is the cause of nearly every character's misery throughout the series. He is a half-demon who originated from a bandit named Onigumo ("Demon Spider"). Naraku's main objective is to gather all the shards of the Shikon Jewel to transform into a full demon. His unrequited love for Kikyo motivated him to kill her and seal Inuyasha to the tree, forming the fundamental reason behind his transformation into a demon.
