The protagonist is a hybrid of a dog youkai and a human, a half-demon ("han'yo" in Japanese). He wields the Tessaiga (pronounced "Tetsaiga" in the American dub), a supernatural sword crafted from one of his late father's fangs. When wielded correctly, this sword can obliterate a hundred demons with a single strike and possesses additional powers revealed as the narrative unfolds. The sword also fuels the enmity between Inuyasha and his brother Sesshomaru, a full-blooded dog demon, because Inuyasha can wield the Tessaiga while Sesshomaru cannot. Inuyasha has remarkable regenerative abilities, recovering from injuries that would be fatal to an ordinary human. This power likely stems from his youkai heritage (e.g., Episode 5, when Kagome brings medicine from her era). On the night of the new moon each month, Inuyasha transforms into a regular human with black hair, brown eyes, and loses his yokai powers during this period. Before meeting his current companions, he would hide himself during these times. Inuyasha loves Kikyo and continues to do so, but complications arise as he starts developing feelings for Kagome. He has mastered various techniques with his sword, including the red Tessaiga capable of destroying barriers, and learned the backlash wave which redirects an opponent's demonic energy back at them.
