Nagi's father is a legendary wizard, though the origin of his title "Thousand Master" remains ambiguous. Some claim he mastered a thousand spells, but this is untrue as he admitted to being a dropout who only knows a few spells and needs pocket notes to cast others. This claim was mentioned in a dream Evangeline had, and since she "hates" him, it may not be accurate. However, Asuna's detailed flashback dream seems to verify this statement.
There's also a rumor that Nagi made probationary contracts with a thousand girls, likely a lie by Albert Chamomile to encourage Negi to make many contracts for a brokerage fee from the Ermine Society. Interestingly, Nagi’s contract with Albireo Imma bears the number 1001 (MI in Roman numerals), which could support this rumor. Nagi is incredibly strong in both magical and physical combat, needing no Ministra Magi to assist him. His fighting style combined magic swordsmanship with swift spellcasting and hand-to-hand combat.
Contrary to popular belief, Nagi never graduated from a wizard school due to dropping out. At ten years old, he won the last Legendary Mahora Martial Arts Tournament, held twenty-five years before the current one. Later, at fifteen, he fought in a magic war, becoming famous for his heroic deeds and earning the title of Thousand Master. He disappeared in 1993, the same year Negi was born, with most assuming he is dead. However, he survived long enough to save Negi from demons attacking his village, giving him his staff before disappearing again.
Flashbacks depict Nagi as a kind and playful man with cunning and shrewdness beyond common sense. The illusionary Nagi created by Albireo shared these traits, albeit with a noticeable ego. Since Albireo's pactio with Nagi is still active, it suggests that the Thousand Master might still be alive.
