Nadeshiko Kinomoto is the mother of Sakura Kinomoto, the main character of the series. She passed away seven years before the story begins. Nadeshiko appears only in flashbacks, photographs, and as a spirit. She was a high school student and a professional model when she met and fell in love with Fujitaka Kinomoto, her teacher. Her family disapproved of their marriage when she was sixteen. Despite this, Nadeshiko continued to send gifts to her father and stayed in touch with her cousin Sonomi Daidouji. At the age of 27, Nadeshiko died, and Sonomi, who deeply loved Nadeshiko, blamed Fujitaka for her death. It is implied that after Nadeshiko's death, the Amamiya family severed all ties with Fujitaka and his children.
Though deceased, Nadeshiko’s love for her family endures. She often visits them as a winged spirit, though initially only Toya could see her. In the manga, it is suggested that Toya inherited this ability from Nadeshiko, indicating she too had the power to see spirits. Throughout the series, she watches over Sakura as she collects the Clow Cards. When the Illusion card tricks Sakura into walking off a cliff, Nadeshiko’s spirit grabs her arm, preventing her fall until Yukito Tsukishiro arrives to catch her. Later, when Sakura develops a high fever, Nadeshiko appears and places her hand on Sakura’s forehead, reducing the fever. When Fujitaka finally reconciles with Nadeshiko’s grandfather, she showers them with cherry blossoms to express her happiness.
The family still cherishes her memory, particularly through a picture kept near the kitchen table. Fujitaka changes the picture each morning, and Sakura greets it every day at breakfast. By the end of the series, after Fujitaka receives half of Eriol’s powers, he can finally see Nadeshiko, allowing them to be "reunited" in a magical sense.
In the anime adaptation, Nadeshiko’s role remains largely the same, except Fujitaka never gains the ability to see her as he does not receive any magical powers. She is voiced by Yūko Minaguchi. In the English dub of Cardcaptors, her name is changed to Natasha Avalon, and she is voiced by Janyse Jaud.
