Monev the Gale is the initial adversary of Vash within the Gung-Ho-Guns. He was imprisoned by Millions Knives for two decades, rigorously training to attain the strength and skill required to confront Vash.
Equipped with a powered battle suit and dual high-powered chain guns mounted on his arms, Monev's weaponry operates at extraordinary speeds thanks to pressure chambers located on his back. The destructive force of these weapons can easily penetrate entire buildings. Additionally, he carries an assortment of other weapons in a large cloth rucksack, including a massive minigun capable of breaching bank vaults.
Legato dispatches Monev to engage Vash, resulting in a devastating conflict across a cityscape that leaves numerous casualties and costs Vash his cybernetic arm. Despite nearly succumbing to his rage and breaking his vow never to kill, Vash ultimately defeats Monev and spares his life. Surrendering his coin, Monev departs, only to later be found murdered and crucified by E.G. Mine as a challenge to Vash.
In the anime adaptation, Monev survives but is subsequently killed by E.G. Mine alongside Dominique the Cyclops due to his failure.
In Trigun Stampede, Monev was originally a boy named Rollo, who lived with his devoutly religious mother in Windmill Village. The villagers practiced child sacrifices to their deity, unknowingly serving Knives' cult, the Eye of Michael. This village served as a testing ground where William Conrad conducted experiments on children.
Vash was familiar with Rollo’s family, and they met after Rollo attempted to flee from home. Rollo revealed to Vash his terminal illness, likely leading to an early death. Although Vash promised to procure medicine, he returned too late.
Rollo was chosen as a sacrifice one night, taken by William Conrad and used in an experiment that accelerated his metabolism, deforming his body into a muscular monster. Instead of discarding him, William implanted a device in Rollo's brain to amplify his emotions and enhance his physical abilities. Years of training transformed Rollo into Monev the Gale, a lethal weapon equipped with heavy artillery.
Monev's appearance draws comparisons to Venom from Spider-Man, especially in contrast to Vash’s red coat. Creator Yasuhiro Nightow is known to admire Spider-Man and related McFarlane products.
