Mito Freecss is Gon's adopted mother and cousin to Ging Freecss. In the manga, Mito was reluctant for Gon to become a Hunter because Ging had only returned home once after taking the Hunter exam. She didn't want Gon to abandon his family like Ging did. In both the manga and the 2011 anime, Ging is portrayed as Mito's cousin. However, in the original anime and novelization, Mito is depicted as the sister of Gon's mother, making Ging her brother-in-law. Mito was upset with Ging for leaving her sister alone at home, forcing her to witness her sister's sadness as she waited by the window for her husband's return. Her sister gave birth to Gon and passed away shortly after, without ever seeing her husband again. Mito did not want Gon to grow up to be a Hunter who neglected his family like his father. Thus, she fought for and won custody of Gon. Despite Gon leaving, she does her best to support him on his journey.
Mito is a kind-hearted woman who accepts Killua as one of Gon's friends, even after learning he is an assassin. She believes that people should do everything they can to save another's life. When Gon and Killua found a wounded animal in the forest, Mito slapped Killua for suggesting they put it out of its misery and instead encouraged them to heal it using their Nen abilities.
