Gon Freecss is a Rookie Hunter and the son of Ging Freecss. His primary motivation for becoming a Hunter is to find his father. He has been the main protagonist for most of the series.
Gon aims to become a Hunter to understand why his father chose this profession over being with his son. Gon is an athletic, rustic, and friendly boy who craves adventure. However, he struggles with math but excels in handling animals due to his upbringing in the woods. His impulsive nature often leads him into trouble, and he sometimes fails to think things through. Despite his talent, Gon feels compelled to prove himself whenever challenged.
As an Enhancer, Gon possesses a straightforward and determined personality. This determination makes both potential allies and enemies trust and support him. He has heightened senses, including an acute sense of smell akin to a dog's, excellent vision, and a keen sense of taste.
Background:
Due to his father's absence and Mito's dislike of Ging, Gon was told that his parents died in an accident when he was a baby. At nine years old, Gon was rescued from an angry mother Foxbear by Kite, a professional Hunter and a student of Ging. After protecting the Foxbear’s cub, Kite revealed he was searching for Ging as a final test to be acknowledged by his master. This encounter ignited Gon's desire to meet his father, driving him to obtain a Hunter License.
Timeline:
After passing the 287th Hunter Exam, Gon felt uncertain about his next steps. Killua suggested they train at the Heavens Arena to improve their combat skills and earn money.
At the Heavens Arena, Gon and Killua met Zushi and his mentor Wing. Upon reaching the 150th floor, Wing taught them about true Nen. By the end of the month, Wing allowed Gon and Killua to train with Zushi, enhancing their Nen abilities.
During the Yorknew City arc, Gon, along with Killua and Leorio, helped Kurapika avenge his clan against the Phantom Troupe.
After completing the game Greed Island, created by his father, Gon used the Paladin’s Necklace card to teleport to someone whose name was an anagram of "Ging." Instead, he and Killua ended up meeting Kite, Ging’s former student.
In the Chimera Ant arc, Gon faced Neferpitou, who revealed that Kite was dead and could not be revived. Overwhelmed with guilt, Gon unleashed all his power, demanding everything from his Nen without regard for the consequences. This left him unconscious and in critical condition, requiring life support.
Healed by Alluka Zoldyck, Gon traveled to the World Tree with Killua and Alluka. Climbing the tree, Gon finally met Ging. Ging spoke about the vastness of the world and the origins of the Chimera Ants, encouraging Gon to explore the world at his own pace.
