Masakazu is the class representative of 2-D and views class 2-C as his rivals. Despite his evident self-confidence, his personality often results in rejection from his peers. People around him frequently call him "Macaroni," likely because he enjoys incorporating Italian words into his speech. He has a habit of launching into extremely long motivational speeches, usually centered on "facing challenges head-on" or "how to be manly." As the series progresses, his self-assurance and zeal for confronting challenges directly become so intense that his actions and ideas verge on sheer stupidity, often disregarding the safety and well-being of others. For instance, he once suggested charging the ocean liner they were on straight into a giant reef instead of going around it, claiming it was "the manly thing to do."
His entrances are typically accompanied by the U.S. national anthem, as he tends to (subtly) refer to himself as American or hint at having lived in the U.S. during his younger years. Masakazu is a skilled sportsman and martial artist, much like his main rival Hanai, who also takes such activities very seriously.
