She initially appears as a young girl who suddenly attacks Yuuichi Aizawa in town early in the story. She is then taken back to Yuuichi and Nayuki Minase's house, where she stays as a guest for the remainder of her storyline. Despite having lost most of her memories, she remembers her name and holds a grudge against Yuuichi from a past encounter when he visited the city as a child. Makoto's amnesia is more severe than that of Yuuichi or Ayu Tsukimiya but originates from a different cause. Makoto feels sad about pets being abandoned when their owners cannot care for them. This attitude makes it difficult for her to warm up to a stray cat she finds during her story, which she eventually names Piro. Over time, she grows to love Piro very much and often carries the cat on her head. From the start, Makoto's mischievous personality leads her to play various pranks exclusively on Yuuichi due to her strong dislike for him. Her pranks range from dropping food on him to throwing lit firecrackers in his room. As she begins to feel more like part of the Minase family rather than a stranger, she genuinely starts to like Yuuichi, moving past her latent distaste for him. Makoto can be clueless about things that people her age should know, such as buying her own meat buns and manga. Yuuichi once commented on how she lacked common sense due to a lack of social experience. Like Ayu, she has an idiosyncratic expression, "auu~", which she says when frustrated or sad, with no real meaning. Another unique speech pattern is that she always refers to herself in the third person. Near the end of her story, Makoto starts wearing two bells around her right wrist and enjoys the sound they make. In reality, Makoto is not human but a fox that Yuuichi found ten years before the start of Kanon. He discovered the injured young fox on Monomi Hill and kept her in his room for the rest of the summer. One day, Yuuichi told the fox about an older girl he had a crush on named Makoto Sawatari, which becomes the source of Makoto's name at the beginning of Kanon. At the end of summer break, Yuuichi returned the fox to the hill and left, causing the fox to be angry with him. Her intense desire to see Yuuichi again led to her wish being granted at the cost of her memories and eventually her life. The two reunite after the fox transforms into Makoto near the start of Kanon. Makoto dies after a fake marriage ceremony with Yuuichi.
