Legretta the Quick is a God-General of the Oracle Knights in the game Tales of the Abyss. She is one of Van's most trusted subordinates and often acts as his bodyguard, executing his complex operations and occasionally issuing commands to other God-Generals. Additionally, she holds the rank of Major in the regular Oracle Knights and was Tear Grants' instructor. Legretta shares close ties with both Tear and Van but opposes Tear and her allies multiple times throughout the storyline. She wields a pair of fon-tech handguns and uses Light Fonic Artes. Her Japanese name is Regret, and her title is Magic Bullet.
Motive:
Initially, Legretta served as a Major in the Oracle Knights and was a role model for Tear Grants. Later in the story, she admits to feeling depressed about something related to the Score, though she never openly reveals what it is. She was frustrated by how the Score dictated people's lives and made them dependent on it. Legretta questioned whether she herself was merely a puppet controlled by the Score, even doubting if her emotions were influenced by it.
Refusing to be controlled by the Score, she joined Van as a God-General to help him pursue his ideals of creating a replica world and eradicating the Score and its followers. Over time, Legretta developed feelings for Van and dedicated herself entirely to his plans. This may have been when she stopped being Tear's instructor, although there is no clear evidence of this in the game.
Legretta lost faith in Auldrant and its inhabitants, leading her to support Van's plan to destroy the current world and create a new one free from the Score's influence. She showed this loss of faith during the massacre of Sheriden, where she showed little regard for civilian lives. She remained loyal to Van, willing to risk her life for his vision. She believed that a world where people depend on the Score is better off destroyed.
The only person Legretta seems to care for besides Van is Tear. As her former instructor, they once shared a close bond. Legretta often tries to convince Tear to join Van's side, but Tear refuses, insisting she will not follow Legretta while she remains loyal to Van. Legretta hesitates to fight Tear but eventually realizes that converting her is futile due to their opposing ideals.
Legretta fights the party three times (excluding the replica battle in the Abyss optional dungeon). Each encounter begins with her shooting a bullet near the party's feet. The first battle occurs at Deo Pass, before reaching Akzeriuth. After defeat, she calls Luke a "reject," hinting at his nature, and mentions fomicry's resurrection by the Oracle Knights.
The second battle takes place on Mt. Roneal alongside Largo the Black Lion and Arietta the Wild. Again, she tries to convert Tear to Van's side, unsuccessfully. Following defeat, an avalanche seemingly kills her and her companions, but she survives. Later, she pursues Asch after Van's apparent defeat, trying to obtain the Jewel of Lorlei and prevent the assembly of the Key of Lorelei.
The final battle occurs shortly after the party crash-lands in Eldrant. Legretta expresses her desire to destroy the Score-plagued world, even if it means creating a replica. Upon defeat, she confesses her love for Van and dies praying for him to reform the twisted world ruled by the Score.
Appearance:
Legretta is approximately Tear's height, 26 years old, and wears standard black Order of Lorelei attire similar to Tear's default outfit. She has long blonde hair tied into a ragged ponytail and a red cloth draped around her arms and trailing down her back. She carries two fon-tech handguns behind her back. Later in the game, her outfit gains a small white metallic mantle around her chest and the red cloth is replaced with a metallic version that retains a flowing appearance.
Legretta has a staccato voice and speaks loudly before battles. However, when speaking with Tear, Van, or other God-Generals, she uses a gentle tone masking her combat prowess. In the Japanese version, she is voiced by Miki Ito, and in the American version, by Cindy Robinson.
Personality:
Legretta is calculating, intelligent, and dangerous. She speaks calmly and excels in negotiation and explaining her beliefs. She remains loyal to Van, following his orders regardless of their nature. In Eldrant, she argues that people should have free will rather than being bound by Yulia's Score. She claims gaining free will required rejecting and destroying the Score. Tear counters that believing only Van's desires are right denies true free will. Despite this, Legretta remains steadfast in her beliefs and continues fighting Tear.
Legretta hides her emotions effectively, appearing as an efficient, emotionless soldier. She taught Tear that showing emotions makes one a poor soldier, influencing Tear's resolve not to cry or show fear.
Fighting Skill:
Legretta is a formidable fighter, dual-wielding fon-tech guns that never seem to need reloading. She can unleash endless shooting combos and has a powerful spinning attack that fires a single bullet capable of halving a character's HP and knocking them down. She has high physical defense but can be staggered during spell casting. Her fonic artes include light elemental spells and high-level water spells like Blessed Drops. She can use arcane strike artes without an FOF, turning the tide of battle unexpectedly.
Legretta's special skills include Rage Laser, which fires a penetrating beam of light, and her signature Mystic Arte, Prism Ballet, which creates walls of light around her and ends with a larger version of Rage Laser. She is resistant to light-based fonic and strike artes, with her element being light.
Her real name is Giselle Oslo.
