montague laertes

Laertes Montague is portrayed as a ruthless, Machiavellian Duke of Neo Verona. Throughout the narrative, he orchestrates the massacre of the House of Capulet and seizes control over Neo Verona, spreading false narratives about Capulet corruption to justify his actions and avoid retribution. As the ruler of Neo Verona, Montague believes that the House of Montague has the right to exploit and oppress the common people, considering noblemen superior. He is Romeo's father but treats him coldly, using him merely as a political tool. He is also one of the few who knows the secrets of the Escalus Tree, alongside its caretaker Ophelia and an enigmatic old man encountered by Romeo and Juliet in the countryside. Tybalt privately reveals to Juliet the known origins of his father. Montague was originally born into poverty. His mother was a prostitute and abandoned by his father. On her deathbed, she confessed to her young son that his father was a Capulet and wished for him to achieve nobility. Her death deeply fueled his intense and fierce resentment against the Capulet name and his ambitions to become Duke. Later, young Laertes caught the attention of the Montague family, then led by a pederast lord, and was adopted into the clan. In his late teens, he poisoned his benefactor's food and became head of the family. He then met Tybalt's mother (a Capulet woman who reportedly died during the massacre) at a ball and used her to gather information about the Capulets, particularly about the Great Tree Escalus. After impregnating Tybalt's mother, he left her and married Portia. Upon learning of Romeo's love for Juliet, Montague claimed his son had been deceived into turning against him. Romeo's repeated declarations of love for Juliet infuriated him, leading to Romeo's punishment by being sent to the mines. With Mercutio's adoption, it appears Montague decided to disown his son, evident with the "accidental death" of Titus. In the final moments of his reign, he is cornered by Tybalt, Romeo, and Juliet's forces in his throne room. No longer surrounded by loyal followers, he curses Escalus for Capulet's downfall. After hearing Juliet's offer to peacefully exile himself and renounce his status from Neo Verona, he seems ready to agree. Before he can respond further, Mercutio stabs him from behind, causing him to collapse. As he lies in Juliet and Romeo's arms, he questions why no one loved him yet expresses his desire to be the most feared in the world. He dies shortly after.
