(Anime) Drive to Duel: To find "something eternal," claim Anthy as his Rose Bride, and defeat Touga
As the Vice-president of the Student Council and captain of the kendo team, he is Utena's first duelist. Saionji exhibits a volatile temperament, often displaying egotism, anger, cruelty, and extreme possessiveness over Anthy. His conviction that they are destined together pushes him to act violently towards her, even after their engagement ends.
He practices kendo with Touga, but harbors deep resentment towards him, especially when humiliated by Touga, who manipulates this weakness mercilessly. Saionji lacks the perception, intelligence, and skill of Touga, and despite his efforts, he can never surpass him. This estrangement from his childhood friend profoundly affects him.
After expulsion, Saionji briefly stays with Wakaba Shinohara, whose crush on him and subsequent rejection triggered Utena's first duel. His obsession with Anthy pulls him back, igniting events in the Black Rose Arc. He attempts to maintain a covert relationship with Anthy through an "exchange diary," but fails. By the series' end, Saionji and Touga uncover parts of their shared past and seem to reconcile.
In the movie, Saionji has a minor role. His personality is exaggerated negatively, making him appear almost psychotically angry initially and delusionally egotistical later. He is more overtly abusive towards the Rose Bride, treating her as a tool, and his love for her is unexplored. His relationship with Touga is absent.
