(Anime) Drive to Duel: To disprove the power of miracles
Juri, the captain of the academy's fencing team, is one of Ohtori's most respected students. Even teachers seem to hold her in high regard.
However, beneath her aloof and intimidating exterior, she is deeply vulnerable. She was hurt by her friend Shiori, whom Juri secretly loved. Initially, viewers are led to believe that Shiori stole Juri's boyfriend, but it's later revealed that Juri cared about Shiori all along.
Juri firmly claims she doesn't believe in miracles and seeks the Rose Bride's power to disprove them. Yet, she desperately wishes for a miracle to resolve her issues with Shiori. Her hardened attitude often conflicts with Utena's naivete and optimism, reminding Juri of her former self.
She wears a locket containing Shiori's picture. In the Black Rose arc, Shiori learns of Juri's feelings when Mikage shows her the locket's contents. During her final duel in the third arc, Utena breaks Juri's locket, causing her to lose the match.
In both versions, Juri learned swordsmanship from an older student, Ruka Tsuchiya. In the manga, Touga reveals Juri only became interested in him after Ruka disappeared. In the anime, Juri denies any romantic interest in Ruka. Regardless, Ruka returns despite serious illness to give Juri the power of miracles and save her from her burdens. Though they can't defeat Utena, Juri resolves her issues with Shiori by the end of her final duel. Their relationship becomes more peaceful, with Juri jokingly asking for Utena's picture for her new locket.
In the final episode of Utena, Juri recounts a story about her elder sister nearly drowning. A boy dies trying to save her sister; this theme is revisited in the movie. Her last appearance shows her training her fencing club members, including the newly inducted Shiori.
In the manga, Juri is the student council treasurer, nicknamed 'The Beautiful Leopard,' and the fencing club captain. There is no Shiori; instead, Juri loves Touga, who is in love with Utena. Thus, Juri sees Utena as her rival and takes a more antagonistic role against her.
In Adolescence of Utena, Juri is the Student Council president (alongside Miki and Saionji). Wakaba calls her "The Prince." She allows Shiori to manipulate her but feels trapped by her as well.
In a scene where young Touga saves a drowning girl, leaving Utena behind, we never see the girl's face or learn her identity. Director Ikuhara reveals that the girl is actually Juri herself, possibly explaining why she acts as "Prince" to Shiori due to guilt over Touga's death. This mirrors Juri's story in the TV series' final episode, wherein her elder sister nearly drowned.
Juri's elder sister never appears in the anime, movie, or manga.
