An enigmatic and introverted girl, Anthy's sometimes vacant expressions and superficial politeness conceal deeper layers. People often project their desires onto her, making her a target for their subsequent rage or hatred. Her submissive behavior hides a much more intricate persona.
Anthy seems to harbor the Sword of Dios within her body. At the start of a duel, she enters a trance, allowing the sword to emerge from her chest so her champion can draw it. This sword is believed to be crucial for achieving Revolution, with Anthy as the Rose Bride being key to obtaining it.
She also displays other unusual abilities, such as magically enhancing Utena's uniform before duels. Anthy appears capable of altering her appearance or inducing others to see her differently. There are hints that she can transform others too (as seen in "The Cowbell of Happiness" episode).
According to the Adolescence of Utena manga, Anthy is responsible for initiating the dueling games where she is the prize. After her prince Dios (or Akio) died, she was reborn as the Rose Bride. This role activated the Dueling Arena and set the "game" in motion to find another "Prince" to replace Akio. In the anime series, the duels aim to restore Akio’s former powers and open the Gate of Revolution.
In the movie, Anthy seems happier and is more sexually assertive towards Utena. Her physical appearance changes; she no longer wears glasses, and her hair is loose (similar to her look in the last few episodes of the anime). Her dress design is mainly white. Anthy seemingly saves Utena by encouraging her to move past her vice (Touga) and subverts the damsel in distress trope.

Both the anime and manga present similar yet distinct circumstances leading Anthy to become the Rose Bride. In the movie, the world sees her brother Dios as a prince, but he is actually the tainted Lord of the Flies. He commits suicide after his shameful secret is revealed to Anthy, prompting her to establish the Duels to find a replacement prince. Anthy later wholeheartedly accepts Utena as the prince she had been waiting for, but Utena decides they should leave Ohtori for a world without princes and princesses.
In the anime, Dios is an actual prince saving girls daily until his power weakens to near-death. To protect him, Anthy faces an angry mob alone and is stabbed by countless swords. These swords take on a life of their own, forever thirsting for princely blood. To combat the pain, Anthy splits herself, sealing the part containing the swords beyond the Rose Gate, becoming the Rose Bride. This incident destroys Dios' nobility, splitting him into two parts—one altruistic but powerless ghost, the other Akio. No longer a prince, Akio establishes the Dueling Game to regain power. Anthy accepts her role despite the suffering because she doesn’t want to live in a world that tortured her and her brother.
Anthy appears to be of Asian Indian descent, likely Tamil. She is noticeably darker than other characters and wears a bindi mark or jewel.
