Karla, the Grey Witch, is a complex figure who has significantly influenced the history of the cursed island of Lodoss. As the sole survivor of an ancient Magic Kingdom, she has endured for over 500 years. Her physical form ceased to exist long ago, but her soul, contained within a golden circlet, periodically inhabits human hosts, allowing her to experience life anew. Following the collapse of the Magic Kingdom, Karla believes that the only way to prevent Lodoss from being destroyed is by maintaining a delicate balance between peace and chaos. Thus, during times of war, she seeks to establish peace; during times of peace, she stirs conflict. Karla argues that this equilibrium ensures Lodoss's survival. Over the centuries, she has switched hosts repeatedly, observing and subtly guiding the island's history. In the era depicted in Record of Lodoss War (RLW), Karla appears to align with Beld, the Marmo king, and Ashram, leading Parn and his allies to view her as evil. However, Karla remains indifferent to which side prevails, as long as extreme peace or chaos does not dominate. Initially, she instigates wars by aiding Beld; later, she offers assistance to Parn and his companions to foster peace.
